| Northwest Iowa Drug Taskforce |
|
The Northwest Iowa Drug Task Force was formed in 1986. Members in 1986 consisted of: Hawarden Police Department and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office. Sioux County Deputy Todd Erickson was the first director of the Task Force.
In 1989 Sioux County Deputy Gerry Holtrop took over as director; with the help of funding from a federal grant (Byrne Grant), Rock Valley, Sioux Center and Orange City Police Departments became members. In 1992 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office also became a Task Force member. In 1996 the Le Mars Police Department also joined as a member. The Sheldon Police Department is active in the task force, but not a member at this time.
Sgt. Nate Huizenga is currently the Director of the Task Force.
From 1987 to 2004 the Northwest Iowa Drug Task force has executed 120 search warrants, secured 392 felony arrests, 721 misdemeanor arrests and seized 69,799 dollars in forfeiture. The total dollar amount of street drugs seized was 253,513.
The Task Force is primarily responsible for the investigation of drug crimes. Since drugs have no economical or social boundaries they affect everyone. Drugs have been involved with many other crimes; a variety of miscellaneous crimes have been solved because of the involvement of the Task Force. The Task Force also presents many educational programs to schools, businesses, churches, and civic groups; approximately 1400 programs since its inception. The Sheriff’s Office also has a drug dog which is available to do drug programs, or searches. Click on our "Canine" tab for more information.
The Task Force continues to call on the public for its support; this is accomplished by calling in with tips concerning drug activity. Click on our "Crimestoppers" tab for more information on how to report a tip.
